With just two days remaining before the sequester, President Obama has still failed to make the two-mile trek over to the Capitol to work with us on cuts to wasteful Washington spending.
It’s not surprising that Americans aren’t falling for President Obama’s sequester fear-mongering tour. We all remember the false claims by Obama in 2009 when he promised that his stimulus bill would keep unemployment below eight percent. After President Obama wasted more than $800 billion on his failed stimulus bill, unemployment stayed at or above eight percent for 43 consecutive months. The president’s long history of false claims and broken promises provide a fitting backdrop to the president’s current Chicken Little impersonation as he tries to convince the public that a 2.4% spending cut that he proposed in 2011 will now somehow be the end of American civilization as we know it.
The sequester was the brainchild of the Obama administration in the first place, and the House passed targeted spending cuts to replace the across-the-board sequester nearly 300 days ago. Washington clearly has a spending problem, and we need real spending cuts in order to get our country back on track.
It’s time for liberals in the White House and Senate to come to grips with the fact that Washington needs to start living within its means.
Rather than an arbitrary across-the-board cut, President Obama should park Air Force One and work with us to cut wasteful spending that is rampant throughout the federal government. Like we highlighted yesterday the president could cut $26 billion just by eliminating fraud in the food stamp program. Each day we are highlighting areas of waste the president should cut instead of threatening the basic operations of government. Here is another example of waste that President Obama does not want to make:
- Eliminating the Public Health Slush Fund in ObamaCare, which Democrats have supported reducing, we could save approximately $10 billion.
